In 2007 I travelled overland from Johanessburg, South Africa via Mozambique to Chinthechi, Malawi.  On the trip were a collection of musicians and performers due to play at the Lake of Stars music festival on the shores of Lake Malawi. Over a distance of around 3000km, which roughly translated into over 70 hours of driving, we passed through the contrasting landscape of three countries on one long straight, seemingly endless road. The journey was broken up by brief overnight stops along the way, but for most of the time we were passengers on a truck for up to 12 hours a day, spectators to daily life on the road in Africa.
